Arsenal Crash Out of Champions League After Extra-Time Heartbreak

Beattie Levels for Gunners, Bremer Grabs Late Winner

Arsenal's dream of reaching their first Women's Champions League final since 2007 came crashing down in dramatic fashion on Thursday evening as VfL Wolfsburg secured a 5-4 aggregate victory in the semi-finals.

The Gunners had fought back from a 2-1 first-leg deficit to level the tie in the 73rd minute through Katie Beattie's strike. However, Wolfsburg's Jill Roord canceled out Beattie's goal in the 89th minute to send the match into extra time.

In the first period of extra time, Arsenal substitute Frida Maanum came close to grabbing a vital away goal, but her effort hit the crossbar. Wolfsburg then took the lead in the dying seconds of the second half of extra time, with Dominique Janssen heading home a corner.

Arsenal will be disappointed not to have reached the final, but they can take heart from their performance over the two legs of the semi-final. They showed great character to come back from behind in both matches, and they created several good chances to win the tie. Wolfsburg were ultimately the better team, but Arsenal can be proud of their efforts.
